Intervention to Address Emotional Regulation & Behavioural Challenges
Supporting Children and Families with Emotional Regulation Challenges: A Coregulation Approach (90-Minute Workshop)
This workshop equips occupational therapists and allied health professionals with the tools to effectively support children experiencing emotional regulation difficulties. Through a trauma-informed, attachment-based lens, you'll learn how coregulation—where caregivers and therapists help children manage their emotions—can lay the groundwork for future self-regulation.
What You’ll Learn:
- The foundations and benefits of a coregulation approach versus traditional behaviour management.
Understanding the roots of emotional regulation challenges, including trauma, attachment, and neurodevelopmental issues. - How to use the Circle of Security model to inform your therapeutic recommendations, enabling caregivers to respond effectively to their child’s emotional needs, fostering secure attachment, and co-regulation.
- How to apply the Hand Model of the Brain to explain emotional regulation to caregivers, using this simple tool to illustrate brain reactions to stress and how coregulation helps calm the child’s brain and engage logical thinking.
- Practical strategies for recognizing a child’s arousal levels and supporting emotional regulation in real-time.
- Coregulation techniques that can be applied both at home and in school.
- When and how to start working on self-regulation in a developmentally appropriate way.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is ideal for occupational therapists, educators, and allied health professionals who work with children facing emotional regulation and behavioural challenges.
