Discover essential knowledge and practical skills to implement effective life skills

Join us for a workshop designed specifically for occupational therapists looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in implementing Life Skills Training for clients with disabilities. This will include an overview of the implications of life skills training within the context of the new NDIS legislation and in particular, the use of assistive technology items in this area.

This comprehensive session will cover practical approaches for working with individuals who have conditions such as Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Neurological Conditions, and Developmental Delay, among others.

This workshop is ideal for OTs at any stage of their career who are looking to develop their expertise in working with adolescent and adult clients to build independence in activities of daily living (ADLs). Whether you are new to this area or looking to refine your approach, this session will provide valuable insights and tools to improve your practice.

Key learning objectives include:

  • Understanding Life Skills Training: Gain a deep understanding of what Life Skills Training entails, including both assessment and intervention strategies to support skill development for everyday tasks.
  • Client-centred approaches: Learn how to tailor life skills interventions to the unique needs, goals, and preferences of each client, ensuring a person-centred and outcome-focused approach.
  • Assessment techniques: Explore evidence-based assessment methods for evaluating a client's current skill level and identifying areas for growth across ADLs such as personal care, household management, and community participation.
  • Developing individualised intervention plans: Learn how to create targeted intervention plans that help clients build essential life skills, including communication, problem-solving, self-care, and other ADL competencies.
  • Supporting independence: Discover how to empower clients to develop their independence and functional abilities, enhancing their quality of life and fostering greater autonomy in their day-to-day activities.
  • Practical strategies: Gain access to practical tools, case studies, and examples to implement immediately in your practice, from breaking down complex tasks to using adaptive techniques for success.

This workshop will not only increase your competence in delivering Life Skills Training but also boost your confidence in working with clients who have a wide range of disabilities. Expand your toolkit with evidence-based approaches and leave with actionable strategies to improve your client outcomes in this critical area of practice.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

I have learned the importance of working on skill goals that my clients are motivated to achieve, rather than forcing them to learn things they don't want to.Additionally, I have become more careful with my recommendations for assistive technology, ensuring that the devices are modified or justified for use with NDIS funding. I have also learned the importance of task analysis to identify specific steps that my clients struggle with. This helps me determine whether to use adaptive devices, compensation strategies, or modify the environment for my clients to successfully perform specific tasks, such as making a sandwich.

The life skills workshop provided a detailed overview of how to incorporate life skills training into everyday practice. I found the underpinning models of practice and frameworks helpful to review. OTs would benefit from the frameworks and models underpinning our everyday practice to inform and adapt their interventions.
