Live Workshop: Weight-Bearing, Moving and Handling

This is the second installment of a not-to-be-missed series presented by Aideen Gallagher, manual handling author, advisor and educator.

Part 2 consists of 6 sessions:
Session 1: Thursday 27th March, 10.00am - 11.30am AEDT
Session 2: Thursday 3rd April, 10.00am - 11.30am AEDT
Session 3: Thursday 10th April, 10.00am - 11.30am AEST
Session 4: Thursday 17th April, 10.00am - 11.30am AEST
Session 5: Thursday 24th April, 10.00am - 11.30am AEST
Session 6: Thursday 1st May, 10.00am - 11.30am AEST

Duration: Each session is 90 minutes in duration. The total duration of Part 2 (consisting of 6 sessions) = 540 minutes of live online learning.

Session 1: Device Discovery - Sit-to-Stand and Stand Pivot Aids Compared

  • Compare various non-powered devices for weight-bearing standing transfers.
  • Understand the similarities and differences between sit-to-stand and stand pivot aids.
  • Learn how to identify when a client’s function has deteriorated beyond the use of these devices.
  • Gain strategies for initiating conversations about alternative options with clients and their families.

Session 2: Standing Hoists - To Prescribe or Not to Prescribe?

  • Explore the skill sets clients need to safely use powered standing hoists.
  • Learn strategies for prescribing standing hoists and managing transitions when the device is no longer appropriate.
  • Discover collaborative approaches to support clients during times of change.

Session 3: Handling Resistance - When Clients Decline Full Lifting Hoists

  • Understand the OT’s role when a client declines a full lifting hoist despite safety concerns.
  • Develop a framework for working collaboratively with clients to maintain safety for all parties involved.
  • Learn strategies for addressing resistance while respecting the client’s autonomy and preferences.

Session 4: Crafting Precision - Writing Effective Weight-Bearing Reports

  • Unpack the structure of manual handling risk assessments and reports for weight-bearing clients.
  • Learn how to set up an assessment and include essential elements in your reporting.
  • Incorporate the NSW Code of Practice for Manual Tasks and relevant legislation into your reports.

Session 5: Lifting Off the Ground - Comparing Three Transfer Devices

  • Explore the options for moving clients off the floor and assess if a hoist is always the best solution.
  • Objectively evaluate two devices for off-the-floor transfers, considering client skill sets and worker assistance.
  • Learn how to complete off-the-floor hoist transfers safely, efficiently and with high quality.

Session 6: Safety First - Developing Procedures for Weight-Bearing Clients

  • Discover how to create safe, efficient and high-quality care routines for weight-bearing clients.
  • Learn how to provide guidance and training for clients and their carers.
  • Outline the elements of a safe work procedure to produce quality documents for participants and their carers.

About the Presenter

Aideen Gallagher is an Occupational Therapist who has worked in moving and handling for the last 20 years. She is the author of the Amazon #1 best-selling book ‘The Manual Handling Revolution’ as well as her second book released in 2021, ‘SmartCare’. Aideen is the co-creator of the SmartCare passport a systematic safe work procedure product which was winner of the InnvoAGEING award for productivity in Aged Care in 2021. In 2018, Aideen was a finalist for the Safe Work Leadership award in NSW Australia.

Aideen is known in the field for her innovative teaching methods based on her post graduate diploma in Education. Her workshop and keynote presentations were voted best presentations at the National Back Exchange Conference in the UK in 2019.
