Live Workshop: The Foundations of Moving and Handling Assessments
This is part of a not-to-be-missed series presented by Aideen Gallagher, manual handling author, advisor and educator.
Part 1 consists of 4 sessions:
Session 1: Thursday 27th February, 10.00am - 11.30am AEDT
Session 2: Thursday 6th March, 10.00am - 11.30am AEDT
Session 3: Thursday 13th March, 10.00am - 11.30am AEDT
Session 4: Thursday 20th March, 10.00am - 11.30am AEDT
Duration: Each session is 90 minutes in duration. The total duration of Part 1 (consisting of 4 sessions) = 360 minutes of live online learning.

Session 1: A Model for Understanding Moving and Handling for Clients with Disabilities
- Understand how moving and handling tasks are classified as ‘necessary’ or ‘unnecessary.’
- Develop a model to guide assessments and interventions for weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing clients.
- Identify key tasks for assessment and intervention, including training and safe work procedure documentation.
- Gain a structured approach to tackle moving and handling challenges with confidence.
Session 2: Understanding the Legislation Governing Moving and Handling in Australia
- Explore the legal frameworks occupational therapists must adhere to when advising on moving and handling routines.
- Understand your role when working with paid care workers and representing clients.
- Learn how to navigate legislation from assessment through to client discharge.
Session 3: How to Do a Moving and Handling Assessment
- Learn a framework for assessing moving and handling routines using risk management tools.
- Integrate frameworks from Session 1 to simplify assessments and reporting.
- Apply the framework to real-life tasks, identifying ‘necessary’ versus ‘unnecessary’ moving and handling practices.
- Gain practical insights into documenting findings systematically for clear communication.
Session 4: Collaborative Assessment in Moving and Handling
- Unpack the dynamics of client and stakeholder relationships during assessments.
- Explore common challenges that arise during sensitive moving and handling discussions.
- Learn strategies to maintain therapeutic engagement and build collaboration with all stakeholders.
- Implement practices that enhance relationships while solving complex moving and handling problems.

Aideen Gallagher is an Occupational Therapist who has worked in moving and handling for the last 20 years. She is the author of the Amazon #1 best-selling book ‘The Manual Handling Revolution’ as well as her second book released in 2021, ‘SmartCare’. Aideen is the co-creator of the SmartCare passport a systematic safe work procedure product which was winner of the InnvoAGEING award for productivity in Aged Care in 2021. In 2018, Aideen was a finalist for the Safe Work Leadership award in NSW Australia.
Aideen is known in the field for her innovative teaching methods based on her post graduate diploma in Education. Her workshop and keynote presentations were voted best presentations at the National Back Exchange Conference in the UK in 2019.
